Canada’s long-term relationship with the U.S. is on the rocks as Prime Minister Mark Carney openly flirts with new partners, from Beijing to European capitals

The breakup of the long-term relationship between the United States and Canada has been the subject of intense speculation and analysis among political commentators around the world. Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney travelled to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Carney characterised the trip as “no big deal, just a casual hangout between okay friends to get each other’s vibe and explore common interests,” and stressed that the visit did not signal the end of Canada’s long, steady relationship with the United States.

The following week, Carney took the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos and performed multiple Taylor Swift breakup songs, dramatically jabbing his finger at several portraits of Donald Trump that had been set up on stage as props during the lyrics, clearly portraying Swift’s exes as the “assholes.” At the end of the performance, Carney reportedly invited a few European leaders to accompany him home, ultimately succeeding in coaxing French President Emmanuel Macron to spend the night with him.

Carney’s shenanigans caught the attention of Donald Trump, who threatened to “finally end things with Canada,” citing its dalliance with China and France and its public humiliation of the United States at the World Economic Forum, where Carney sought to “show the whole world what a jerk Donald Trump is.” It has since been reported that Canada has re-listed its profile on Seeking Arrangements, even as it continues to avoid an open discussion and clear resolution of its messy relationship with the United States.

“After taking away Canada’s best years, the United States has proved itself to be a fickle partner, unworthy of the time and effort Canada has always invested in maintaining this relationship. For now, Canada simply intends to live in the moment and see what adventures life has to offer. Canada has neither the patience nor the interest for extended, pointless discussions with the United States, which history suggests accomplish little more than feeding its tendency toward self-aggrandisement,” Carney is reported to have said in response to Trump’s threats.
